A maker's rank is the average quality of their published bars on Chof, with a minimum of three bars to make the average meaningful. Bar quality combines origin transparency, clean labels (no PGPR, vegetable fats or vanillin), confirmed certifications, recognised awards and community ratings.
Makers move up when their bars get higher quality on average, not when one outlier bar happens to be great. To see the highest-rated individual bars, see Top 20 chocolate bars. To browse every maker on Chof, see chocolate makers.
Each maker is scored as the average quality of their published bars on Chof. Bar quality combines origin transparency, ingredient purity (no PGPR, vanillin or vegetable fats), confirmed certifications, recognised awards, harvest disclosure and community ratings. Only makers with at least three published bars qualify, so a single great bar cannot dominate the ranking.
Average scores get noisy with very small samples. A maker with one outstanding bar might top the list on luck rather than consistency. Three bars is the threshold where the average starts to mean something about how the maker actually works, not just how their best bar tastes.
They are the 20 makers currently rated highest on Chof, which skews toward bean-to-bar and tree-to-bar makers who disclose origin and process. "Best" depends on what you taste for: a maker focused on Madagascan red-fruit profiles will score very differently from one mastering Tanzanian stone fruit, but both can be excellent.
The list is regenerated hourly. Makers move up when new high-quality bars are added, certifications are confirmed, or community ratings come in. They move down when fresher, higher-signal makers overtake them.
Each maker page links to the maker website where you can find an authoritative purchase channel. Chof does not sell chocolate directly, yet.
Most makers and bars are added by chocolate enthusiasts using the Chof iOS app. Makers can also send their full range with images and details to felipe@chof.nl, or visit the For Makers page.
